animatronic tail notes
raw dump:
Adafruit trinket 16mhz for "really simple animatronic tail"
Adafruit Gemma2
TX1020 HP touchsmart laptop with win8.1 x64
I wasn't working on the gemma project as I'm waiting on parts to arrive, but took out the board to compare.
Trinket board does not pulse the red LED. It turns on and then shortly after, off. no pulse or blink.
Device manager does not show it.
After reading someone else's issue with a power-only usb cable I tried a new cable and the trinket now goes into bootloader mode. I can't see a difference in the two cables but there you have it. Script still doesn't upload.
Changed USB ports on my PC to another of the 3 outlets. Suddenly it was behaving more like the descriptions on this forum. The trinket was even listed in device manager with the warning triangle and the opportunity to install drivers, which I did, and they took.
There was yet an error from control panel:"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attemptiont o install it. USBtiny
This device cannot start (code 10)
and some stuff suggesting I hassle someone else about it.
I ran over and tried the Blink! script in the arduini IDE and it took. This is promising.
So I tried to upload the tail script. "avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)
Tried unplugging and replugging the device but it just runs the blink script now.
So I hit the reset button again and the update and did this several times in a row in case it's my timing and it finally loaded the script.
I don't know if I learned anything or if I'll be back over the next project but there you go, it's a start.
Gemma is recognized when plugged in and something installs that pops up a warning "USB device not recognized
The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." The gemma's red LED does pulse. This device shows up with the warning triangle in device manager.
I installed the latest IDE from the "animatronic tail" tutorial. I went through and made sure I had the right programmer and board selected. In stages I did this, as I first worked on following instructions. That had me doing a failed code upload with the message in red: avrdude: usbdev_open (): did not find any USB device "usb"
This message is all I get every time I try again.
I also tried loading the blink script. Neither the trinket nor the gemma took it.

Device manager:
Got the signed drivers from this site. Unzipped them and ran the x64 install file. I have done this multiple times, sometimes in administrator mode, sometimes just my user account with admin privs.
I tried browsing to the folder to update the driver and after all that, it tells me "The best driver software for your device is already installed
Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date.
Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)
I have tried this after uninstalling the driver from the same properties window that leads to installing it. It keeps complaining that the device descriptor request failed.
I presume this is the unsigned driver? But I thought the one I grabbed in the link was supposed to be the new signed drivers, and what's more, the newest IDE software seemed to suggest (I only understand about 25% of what I read on this site) that it's got the latest signed official drivers?
I haven't plumbed the depths of a computer's device manager, driver installations, and other complex tasks in two years and can hardly remember how. What's more,I am finding it massively difficult to see my screen text anymore. it's why I've shifted nearly all of my computer activity to an ipad. Attaching a monitor makes the problem worse and the OS refuses to let me select a lower resolution because mapped window sizes in apps exceed the screen size.
So I can't see what I'm doing. I don't understand it when I do, and can't remember how to do anything.
But I have made this stupid tail and the bits associated. I did the soldering and the sewing and the 3d printing. So why is this board being so difficult?
Now I have to cram the godforsaken thing back in that box...
