Whew, ok, now I finally appreciate why sometimes I want to spend on a campground. $225 later and I can relax until Sunday. I can shower, there's electricity. We were shopping and they gave us a free butterball turkey. I thought I was going back to the farm so could share it with them. Then I said, well, Dan can take it back and she can use it. He checked and she can't, so here it was still in the fridge. Doing a great job pretending to be ice in a cooler. But I did indeed get it plugged in soon enough and now I have the leisure to pull out my big burner and run my pressure canner, my stew pot, etc. I will use charcoal to roast the meat after deboning it and share with the neighbors here. That's the best approach. Then boil what Rene doesn't eat and concentrate it then can it with my tiny jars.
Just coming here and parking has reduced my stress level dramatically.
I called police about the bike and they actually came round, collected the hat and bottle left behind by likely the thief, and sent a pic of my bike out to all the officers. If it's outside, someone will see it. It is a very bright and distinctive bike. I sure hope they don't part it up. I'm just visualizing a police cruiser with it dangling out the back of the trunk or something similar. Probably make me come collect it, though. Maybe not, they know I'm in a bus.
So that helps too, the response from the police was really promising.
I also got ahold of the mechanic on the list which "felt right." You know, that little feeling, if you haven't learned to ignore it, where you might decide it's supernatural guidance? Well that particular one is a bit of a drive but he already reassured me that brake fluid doesn't ignite like that (didnt' think so, it smokes but not flames?) He explained that if I keep the fluid levels up I shouldn't even lose the brakes suddenly, although I am sure I'll know immediately if the hose pure blows. But 10m of highway driving won't do it and I avoid driving where there are a lot of stops and starts, and I drive by throttle, not by stop and go. my service brakes get used only for stopping the vehicle or snubbing them to reduce speed more quickly when necessary. I use good following distance and anticipatory attention habits. It can still be that I'll miss a stop or something, I know I'm fallible, but the point is, I'm easier on the brakes because of this. My smart car is nearly 20 yrs old and never had a brake job, never required new pads. Because I hardly use them. Tires, likewise, last a bit longer because they rarely drag along the ground trying to stop against momentum. My nerves like it too. Much calmer than stomping back and forth constantly.
I can't get over how quickly I'm getting the hang of driving this thing. I figured it would suit me fine, but didn't expect this smooth a start. A few curbs now and then, but nothing else yet has been whacked by my bus. Pretty cool.
Ok, gotta check on the dog
