Bought a turkey.
Well, it was the highlight today, LOL, going to get a turkey to smoke on the weekend. I almost got two but they're huge and very expensive so I didn't. I did pick up two sides of smoked chicken halves. We had some tonight and it's really good. Cheap enough I'd like to go back and buy the rest they have out on stock! It's the kind of thing that makes being on this diet for life no imposition. You lose rye bread with cheddar and mustard but gain high quality fresh and gourmet foods because the focus changes. Expensive? You paying attention to the price of bread and cereal goods? First they brought it into being as a way for the elite classes to keep the masses fed cheaply and prevent rioting. It then continued to be a way of getting maximum mileage out of many foods. In corn starch, flour, syrup, wheat bran, flour, germ, and so much more, they pumped up the meat, they baked up the fruit and veggies, coated things in it, blended it, and so on. I learned to double my meatloaf by adding oatmeal or crushed crackers and an egg to bind it. We did this with hamburgers too. So too do the big companies making our soup, frozen entrees, breakfast, etc. They add whatever they can to cut cost of production and cover quality issues. So you get 50% of the nutrition you think you're getting and you weren't getting that much most of the time anyway. If one follows the standard wisdom of the day, one is eating about 10% true protiens, 25% fruits and veggies, and the rest is all agriculturally grown seeds turned into whatever! Can you imagine paleo man managing to harvest enough grass seeds to make up 65% of his diet?
I would put tree nuts in the same category as true protiens. Animal flesh and nuts are, to me, true protiens, alongside eggs and insects (I won't eat them but I should). I still wonder what's in fungi. What nutrients? hmmm
So I eat protien and plant. fruits, veggies, tree nuts, animal source protien. Paleo. It's not that complicated if you give a damn enough to pay attention and these days there's so much access to info and recipes that it gets easy.
So in addition to picking up meat I took the dogs along and we went into the pet store for bunny litter and nail trims. when I was in Canadian Tire I kept getting my hat stared at extremely much. I had to walk right past TWO hallowe'en witches too. I did notice there were significantly fewer witches represented in the holiday decorations. I wish I could wipe that one from the repertoire. Being a gorgeous purple witch has to help!
The weather was amazing and Dan got home early enough to toss a couple of chicken on the bbq so it's time to eat! Yum Baked potato and chicken (both on bbq) One of my favorite meals.
