october 2024 life update
I haven't written for awhile and things happen. Volunteering in theatre has been very good for me. i would like to parlay it into an IATSE membership. With zero history or documentation or contacts this is asking a LOT. I wish I could jump faster on it but putting in time volunteering is the only hope I have right now.
I went in to workBC to try and massage a resume out of it and was sorely disappointed by the skillsets presented by the support worker. She barely seemed to know how computers work, had a sour puss face and even tried to discourage me at first. Eventually enough info about me came out, in spite of her trying to stay 10 paces distant from the work, the info, and me, metaphorically speaking, that she started to warm up a little bit. She said she thought it was a longshot and I pointed out that even my being alive was a longshot and no point worrying about it. Frankly, it's the shortest shot I have, but proving that is the challenge.
The longer I think about it, the more perfect I am for the film and theatre industry. My biggest issue is the competition being big and they might not be. I mean, with all the negative talk these last however many years, how many newbies are applying? How often are they still getting new permittees? Plus I DO have extensive knowlege and experience in spite of the lack of record. If i can communicate that in my resume, it surely gives me hope?
I made gifts for the next play. See, when you do a play together, you all go to see it the same night. Usually opening night but these folks do it last night so they can party on set and start striking it. There just isn't enough space to have a party on opening night, because you would damage the set for the show. Public can't join you downstairs in the basement either. Space, theft/security and fire safety being good reasons.
See, i know a lot about theatre and some about movies. I really do. I need to put together a theatre based history, because it's pretty near continuous from age 6 with ballet.
So I made these gifts. I had to come up with something to give, it's usually hand made because we're artists in this business. It's usually simple. It's usually one for everyone in the crew. Everyone? Well I got a list of crew volunteers and that's huge. This theatre has a list of over 50 people, most of whom I have not met, even in the painting department. So I noticed there were a total of 11 people in the paint department, and that I wasn't likely to meet them all and decided 12 would ensure enough gifts for my department and if lucky, one for the wardrobe master to whom I wish to ingratiate myself, and one for the director with whom I've worked. Possibly some more for ? But let me get at the bitchy queen Mitchell please, he's good references and I could learn SO much besides if he would let me work for him.
Well, that's one of the reasons I went with embroidery instead of a quick watercolor card. In fact, the pins are mounted on quick watercolor cards. So I hope going over the top isn't so faux pas seeing as it's the christmas play. I want to get Mitchell's attention! So there's 12 cinderella slippers pinned to 12 quick crude sketches of the lion's gate bridge with a trace of cityscape behind. Very sketched and basic. Not exactly as I imagined it. A marker or dip pen would have been better. Calligraphy pen best, but all my inks are dried up and I needed the solid japanese ink and the watercolor pallette to do the job.
I would like to pop into opus for more pigments and some india ink but unfortunately I'm down to $20 for the next 3 wks again.
on the plus side, the bus rescue fund is up high enough to talk about the brake job with some mechanics. If I can find someone nearby I won't need to pay a tow truck because she can get around at slow speeds. It's if she has to be in traffic with her brakes bleeding out into the road that it becomes untenable. I noticed one garage does have a large enough bay so maybe they can do the brakes. Being able to move it around more would be useful. I could perhaps get on location work with IATSE and park on the lot. I should remember to put that in the resume.
Neighbors are all a bust. I don't mind all of them. There's one who is friendly and likeable but suss as hell and then the autistic bus dweller with too many dogs living a life of strife whom i like but who does not see a person in me. He sees an elder I guess, and doesn't much like elders because he's had enough "you shoulds" already. I want his wee dog that he almost gave me too, which affects the dynamic.
I've been discovering that I am malnutritioned, no surprise, but the results are shocking. POTS and fibromyalgia!!!
But seriously, what? So I have to get a lot more salt and vitamins. At least I know that a lot of my daily spoon useage may be fixable.
Well wish me luck. I won't apply for IATSE till next year, but it's an exciting proposition.
